It originated with Spanish pioneers who settled north from Newspain (present-day Mexico) in the 17th century. And at the beginning of the 18th century, weaving techniques and knowledge were passed down from generation to generation for self-sufficient living in remote areas. In 1918, a general store was opened. with Chimayo weaving products and after World War II A Chimayo specialty weaving shop was opened and continues to this day. CHIMAYO Inspried The Chimayo pattern refers to a unique pattern and is also known as the Ortega pattern. The traditional woven wool fabric is called Chimayo weave.
