The "Persimmon Calyx" pattern, named for its resemblance to the calyx of a persimmon and its four-lobed structure, symbolizes the four seasons and four directions. When combined with the stem, it represents the "Five Elements," signifying "endless vitality." This motif has been widely used on bronze mirrors, jade ware, and lacquerware. The ancient text "Youyang Zazu" states, "Among trees, the root is firmest in the persimmon." The persimmon calyx embodies strength and solidity, along with the cosmic concept of the Five Elements, hence its frequent appearance in architectural designs. "Persimmon" (柿, shì) shares the same pronunciation as "matter" or "affair" (事, shì). When combined with other auspicious symbols, it forms phrases like "May all affairs be auspicious" (柿 paired with a kumquat), "May all affairs go as you wish" (柿 paired with a Ruyi scepter), or "May a hundred affairs go as you wish" (a lily, persimmon, and Ruyi scepter).
