Handpainted Dutch ceramic tile in solid wooden frame. Judging by the style, these tiles were produced late 19th century to early 20th century. They are in reasonably good condition, considering their age, with signs of aging, such as craquelure on the glaze and some discoloration. The photographs are a part of the description. 17cm x 17cm “Delft” wall tiles have their origin in the second half of the sixteenth century, known as the early "Golden Age" of The Netherlands when Dutch science, trade, military and art became among the most acclaimed in the world.These popular tiles were often used to decorate fireplaces, kitchens or bathrooms since they could be easily cleaned. Hand-painted, they often depict everyday life of centuries ago, landscapes, animals, flowers, or have a biblical theme, and they are much sought after collector's items nowadays. They come in various sizes, but the two most common sizes are “five-thumb” and “six-thumb”, a thumb being about the width of a man’s thumb (about an inch).
