Shuifei Sand, Imperial Sand, Purple Gold Sand, and Crystal Sand are all high-content quality cinnabar. Their **main differences lie in color, texture, hardness, and production methods**.
**「Shuifei Sand」**
**True red, with a slight orange undertone. The surface has a warm, frosted luster that will become more lustrous with wear, forming a patina.**
The production method involves repeatedly grinding fine cinnabar particles into a paste, stirring with water, collecting the upper "turbid liquid" after settling, and then allowing it to settle again (the Shuifei purification method). The cinnabar mud at the bottom is air-dried and then pressed using ancient methods. Uniform, fine mineral shimmering particles can still be seen on the internal cross-section.
**「Imperial Sand」**
**The color is more towards true red, with a brighter hue and higher hardness.**
The production method involves multiple processes such as crushing, grinding, magnetic separation, Shuifei, and high polishing from natural cinnabar raw ore, gradually purifying it, and then pressing it using ancient methods. Imperial Sand has almost no mineral shimmer on the surface, but has mineral shimmer inside. The surface is treated with a **high polishing** process to present a metallic texture, especially under sunlight, maximizing the metallic feel.
**「Purple Gold Sand」**
**The color is purplish-red, and the hardness is slightly lower than Imperial Sand.**
The production method involves multiple processes such as crushing, grinding, and screening from natural cinnabar raw ore, but **without water purification**. Therefore, the surface is not as fine, and there are scattered small mineral shimmering particles, giving a "starry sky" effect.
**「Crystal Sand」**
**The color is purplish-red and translucent.**
Large cinnabar particles are directly chipped from the cinnabar ore. Visible crystal particles can be clearly seen on the surface. Under light, each particle is transparent and emits a fluorescent red glow.

**> Cinnabar**
In the earliest literature, cinnabar was referred to by a single character, "丹" (dān). "丹" is an ideogrammic compound. Ancient people mined in wells, and extracted minerals from the wells. Therefore, the character "丹" is actually a "well" character with a dot in the middle, meaning something was extracted from a mine. This thing is cinnabar.
Because cinnabar is red, mostly a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, cinnabar was called "朱砂" (zhūshā). "丹" and "朱" describe the color, and "砂" describes the shape, meaning irregular granular minerals.
The color of cinnabar is long-lasting. Chinese painting and calligraphy are called "丹青" (dānqīng), where "丹" refers to cinnabar. An indispensable component of pigments, "Eight Treasures Ink Pad," also has cinnabar as its main ingredient.
From a Feng Shui perspective, cinnabar is collected from minerals that gather the essence of the sun and moon. It absorbs the positive energy of heaven and earth, thus cinnabar has a very strong yang energy magnetic field. We can observe that jade feels cool in the hand, while cinnabar feels warm.
Since ancient times, cinnabar has been used in Taoist rituals for drawing talismans, consecrating objects, warding off evil, and suppressing negative energy. Cinnabar has always been regarded as a supreme item for bringing good luck, changing luck, suppressing evil, driving away spirits, attracting blessings, and accumulating wealth. It carries auspicious meanings of great luck and prosperity and well-being.
The "Shennong Ben Cao Jing" (Classic of Materia Medica) lists cinnabar as a superior herbal medicine, often used in drug treatments for its effects in calming the spirit, detoxifying, and relieving insomnia and excessive dreaming.
Living in modern times, owning one or two cinnabar artifacts can also cultivate one's character and nurture the eyes and heart.
**> Identification**
**All cinnabar products in our store are high-content cinnabar and have a strong sense of weight. You can use the following methods for identification:**
>. Burning cinnabar will turn it black. (Please heat it through an intermediary object. It is generally not recommended to burn finished products directly, as it is difficult to control the time and area. If burned for too long and it turns black, it cannot be restored.)
>. Real cinnabar can draw orangey-red lines on paper. (To avoid damaging the aesthetic of the finished product, please choose an inconspicuous area to draw the line, or use the complimentary bead to draw.)
**> Maintenance**
1. Avoid corrosion
Cinnabar is a mineral and does not dissolve in water, but frequent contact with chemicals such as soap and shower gel can corrode cinnabar.
2. Avoid contact with metal objects
The mineral elements in cinnabar will absorb metal ions, causing irreversible dullness and blackening of the cinnabar.
3. Avoid high temperatures
The mercury sulfide in cinnabar's composition only releases at 380 degrees Celsius. Therefore, as long as you avoid placing cinnabar jewelry in high-temperature environments, you can wear it with confidence.
4. Avoid collision with hard or sharp objects.
Cinnabar has high hardness but is brittle, so be careful to prevent drops.
5. How to clean
If you find that the cinnabar is dirty, do not soak it in water, as this will change its original luster! You can wipe it a few times with a slightly damp cotton cloth and let it air dry for a while.
6. Oiling for maintenance
Wipe a layer of white tea oil or olive oil on the finished product, allowing the stone surface to absorb the oil, making it more crystal clear and bright. After applying oil, if you seal it in a brocade box, you can wrap it in a common plastic film to prevent the oil from staining the brocade box lining.
7. Frequent handling
Frequently handle the cinnabar jewelry worn on your body with your hands, allowing the stone surface to absorb a very thin layer of oil. Over many years, it will appear more antique and elegant.
The actual product is more exquisite and beautiful than the photos.
