You might wonder how freehand machine embroidery differs from standard machine embroidery. In typical machine embroidery, a machine reads an embroidery design and stitches it automatically, resulting in perfectly uniform and identical patterns. Freehand machine embroidery, however, is an artisan skill where the craftsperson manually moves the fabric to create the design. Because it's made by human hands, each piece has a unique character. No two embroidered designs are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery possesses a texture that closely resembles hand-embroidery. The process involves transferring an outline to the fabric and then, while referencing the original design, stitching in sync with the up-and-down motion of the sewing machine needle – a remarkable craft that’s impressive even to imagine. Currently, there are only about 400 people in Vietnam who can perform freehand machine embroidery. Of these, only 50 are able to do it professionally. Furthermore, just 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of embroidery certification. Among them, only 10 can execute the intricate designs required by Pangandaran. However, skill alone isn't enough; embroidery also requires a sense of style. Subtle nuances can significantly alter the overall impression. For this reason, we entrust our work to Hun, a master artisan with exceptional skill. Hun, now 46 years old, began embroidering at the age of 15, giving her 31 years of experience. Moreover, she possesses a truly remarkable sense of style. We have complete faith in her abilities. With Vietnam's economic development, traditional crafts, like many others, face challenging circumstances. Since 2000, the number of individuals capable of freehand machine embroidery has been rapidly declining, and very few young people are learning this skill today. It is anticipated that the number of artisans will continue to decrease, placing the future of Vietnamese freehand machine embroidery in a precarious state, potentially disappearing within the next decade or so.
