This small dish is crafted from white clay, offering a rustic texture and warmth, combined with a straw ash glaze uniquely blended from annually harvested rice straw. Instead of our usual home electric kiln, this piece was fired at a pottery studio we are currently working with, using their oil kiln. It was fired using a reduction firing method, which creates an oxygen-deficient environment inside the kiln. This process imparts a deep, nuanced character that cannot be achieved with an electric kiln. The glaze is the studio's original creation, and they even roast their own rice straw to collect the ash. The resulting color and texture are unlike anything you will find elsewhere. Each firing of this straw ash glaze yields a unique expression. For this particular batch, it has developed a simple, appealing color reminiscent of whole wheat cookies. It exudes a comforting warmth, allowing you to feel the earthy texture characteristic of pottery. While the glossy areas are smooth to the touch, the sections with thinner glaze have a subtle roughness, offering a tactile experience that truly embraces the essence of pottery. Measuring just under 12cm in diameter, this is a slightly larger small dish. It is perfect for use as a side dish plate, a dessert plate, or for serving small portions of dishes like dressed greens or simmered burdock root, as well as a condiment dish. Its earthy tones harmonize beautifully, especially with ingredients that also come from the earth. We invite you to enjoy it with a variety of foods. All stages of production, from kneading the clay to shaping, bisque firing, glazing, and final firing, are meticulously done by hand in my home studio, equipped with a small electric kiln and a potter's wheel. While mass production is not possible, each piece possesses its own unique character, offering the distinct charm that comes from handmade craftsmanship. I continuously explore new combinations of glazes and clays, creating a diverse range of pottery in various colors and forms. For this reason, we apply a waterproofing treatment to all our tableware using a food-safe sealant before shipping, so there is no need for a preliminary soaking (mezome). This waterproofing process requires 2-3 days, which is why we set the shipping period to 5 days from the date of your order. If you do not require the waterproofing treatment, please let us know at the time of purchase. - We strive to capture and edit product images to be as true to the actual item as possible.
