※ Author Biographies
Sima Qian (c. 145–86 BCE)
A literary scholar and historian of the Western Han Dynasty. He angered Emperor Wu of Han by defending Li Ling's surrender, enduring castration as punishment. Sima Qian endured disgrace and was determined to complete his monumental historical work, achieving the compilation of the *Records of the Grand Historian* in 91 BCE, which has been passed down to this day and is widely recognized as a model of Chinese historical writing. Later generations revered Sima Qian as "Shi Qian" and "Grand Historian." His innovative use of the biographical style, creating narratives for individuals, marked a departure from the chronological method of previous historical accounts. This approach was adopted by subsequent official histories and profoundly influenced later historiography and literature.
Wu Cheng'en (c. 1504–1582)
A renowned novelist of the Ming Dynasty. He was intelligent and well-read from a young age, with a fondness for folk tales. In his later years, he dedicated himself to writing, drawing inspiration from the true events of the Tang Dynasty monk's journey to the West. He combined religious mythology and popular legends to create the profoundly imaginative, satirical, and seemingly simple yet literarily rich Chinese classic, *Journey to the West*. This work presents accessible "light" classical Chinese and poetic rhythms, allowing children to easily appreciate the beauty of literature.
Luo Guanzhong (c. 1330–1400)
Given name Ben, courtesy name Guan Zhong, also known by his sobriquet Huhai Sanren. A novelist and playwright of the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties, his works often blend fact and fiction. His writings frequently focus on times of chaos. In addition to *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*, he also authored *The Complete Account of the Sui and Tang Dynasties*, *The Complete Account of the Late Tang and Five Dynasties*, and *The Romance of San Zhuo Conquering Demons*. *Romance of the Three Kingdoms* is listed among the Four Great Classical Novels of China and is a chapter-based novel adapted from the *Records of the Three Kingdoms* by the Western Jin historian Chen Shou.
Anne Frank (1929–1945)
Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Anne Frank moved with her parents and older sister to Amsterdam, Netherlands, in 1933 due to anti-Jewish demonstrations. From 1942 to 1944, as anti-Jewish persecution spread to the Netherlands, Anne's family and four others hid in a secret annex for two long years. In her heartfelt diary entries, she documented the psychological journey of Jews persecuted by the Nazis during World War II. With the keen insight of a teenage girl and the literary talent of an aspiring writer, she profoundly depicted her self-reflection on family conflicts, her exploration of burgeoning romantic interests, and her yearning for freedom under the blue sky and for equal human rights.
