Scroll Pattern Beads
In Buddhist culture, the scroll motif symbolizes "the convergence of all phenomena into one, seamless and unobstructed," representing a profound and internalized philosophy. Within traditional Chinese aesthetics, the scroll pattern is frequently employed in imperial architecture, textiles, and porcelain, signifying auspiciousness and stability.
An Introduction to Southern Red Agate
Southern Red Agate, historically known as "Crimson Jade," possesses a fine and lustrous texture. Its deposits were largely depleted during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty, leading to a significant rise in the value of antique Southern Red Agate. Ancient practitioners utilized Southern Red Agate in traditional medicine for its purported benefits in nourishing the heart and blood. Among the Seven Treasures of Buddhism, the "Crimson Pearl" (Zhen Zhu) is believed to refer to Southern Red Agate. To clean Southern Red Agate, one may dissolve salt in water, mix well, and then soak or wipe the agate.
Due to its volcanic origins, some pieces of Southern Red Agate may exhibit natural fissures. While carving and polishing can reduce their visibility, they are often unavoidable (though flawless pieces exist, commanding exorbitant prices or are often fakes made of plastic). This has led to the modern saying, "No fissure, no Southern Red Agate."
Southern Red Agate comes in many varieties, with "Persimmon Red" being the most sought after. If clear white spots are visible, it indicates "Red and White" material, where red and white coexist, such as the common Red and White Silk material. Pieces with distinct red and white separation are rare.
