Handpainted Westerwald-style salt-glazed stoneware pot with two handles.
This type of stoneware is also known as Kannenbäckerland Stoneware, and it is a distinctive type of salt glazed grey pottery originally from the Höhr-Grenzhausen and Ransbach-Baumbach area of Westerwaldkreis in Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. The layer of salt glaze ensures that the pottery is water tight without adding any flavour to the liquid contained in the pitcher. Westerwald stoneware is typically decorated with cobalt blue painted designs.
