❓ Why is there a custom of burning "street clothes" during the Ghost Festival?
Burning clothes packets is a traditional ritual to commemorate ancestors and departed loved ones. A clothes packet is made from traditional offerings such as gold and silver, ingots, spirit money, and other paper materials, along with paper effigies of clothing, jewelry, hats, shoes, and socks. After placing all items into the packet, the lunar date of worship, the name of the living person, the name of the deceased ancestor, and their ancestral home address are written on the outside. Spirit money is then affixed to the seal as postage. Once completed, the clothes packet can be burned for the ancestors or handed over to the Earth God or Goddess to arrange delivery overseas.
