Door Gods & Couplets / A Pair for Left and Right
Legend has it that in his early years establishing the empire, Emperor Taizong of Tang took countless lives. After ascending the throne, he was frequently tormented by malevolent spirits in his dreams, leaving him restless and gravely ill.
Two of Taizong's formidable generals, Qin Qiong and Yuchi Gong, were thus requested to don their armor and guard the palace gates at night. That very night, all was peaceful; the vengeful spirits dared not return. The Emperor rejoiced but also felt indebted to his generals for their arduous duty. He ordered portraits of the two valiant generals to be painted and hung on his doors. From then on, nights were tranquil, and all evil was vanquished. This practice was carried on by future generations, and they became eternal door gods.
Beyond Qin Qiong and Yuchi Gong, figures like Zhao Yun, Ma Chao, Jiao Zan, and Meng Liang, many renowned generals from antiquity, gradually became beloved door gods in various regions. They watch over homes, ward off demons, and protect households. Bestowing peace and auspiciousness, their tradition thrives to this day.

3) Crucially, avoid using standard double-sided tape or foam tape, as the residue is extremely difficult to remove the next year, leading to much regret.
4) When mounting, ensure the gazes of the two door gods meet for proper placement.
5) For single doors, a distance of 1-4 cm between the two pieces is aesthetically pleasing; avoid placing them too far apart.
