He studied at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and also trained under Kiyokata Kaburagi, a master of traditional Japanese painting and a close associate of the publisher Shōzaburō Watanabe. His studio later became a "talent pool" for Watanabe to discover promising young artists, and many who aspired to work under Watanabe emerged from here. Takashi became one of Watanabe's artists. From the 1920s (his first work was released in 1922) through the 1930s and into the post-war era, he created approximately 50 landscape prints for Watanabe. Watanabe considered Ito Takashi one of his "high-class" designers, alongside Kawase Hasui and Itō Shinsui, whose works were mostly published in Ōban (large) or even larger formats. Takashi's landscape prints possess a profound sense of romantic solitude, evocative of 19th-century German painting and printmaking. Like Kawase Hasui, he rarely included many figures in his compositions, lending his works a mysterious and melancholic atmosphere when viewed. Ito Takashi's print style differs from the flat, monochromatic application often seen in Ukiyo-e; he extensively utilized color gradients and brushstroke effects that are closer to painting than traditional woodblock prints. Achieving this effect required exceptionally skilled carvers and printers. Provides overall composition, character, and landscape design. Ex: Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige, Kawase Hasui. 2️⃣ Publisher (版元, Hanmoto) The core of the team, similar to a "Producer + Distributor." Finances and plans the work, deciding themes and collaborating with artists. Hires carvers and printers, overseeing progress and quality. Responsible for sales and promotion, determining print runs. Ex: Shōzaburō Watanabe during the Shin-hanga movement. 3️⃣ Carver (彫師, Hōshi) Transfers the artist's draft onto woodblocks. Each color requires a dedicated woodblock. Requires extremely high precision, down to the millimeter, to prevent color misregistration. 4️⃣ Printer (摺師, Surishi) Uses the woodblocks and pigments to print the image layer by layer onto Japanese paper. Responsible for color saturation, gradients (ぼかし), and light/shadow effects.
