With continued use, the yarns will meld together, developing a unique, felt-like texture. Each piece is pre-washed before shipping, enhancing its soft, felted feel. Shetland sheep thrive in the harsh natural environment of mountainous regions with rocky terrain and sparse vegetation. This resilience results in wool with long fibers, a mix of coarser and finer hairs, and a higher proportion of naturally pigmented fibers, creating a strong yarn. The characteristic "crimp"—the natural waviness of wool fibers—varies by breed. British wool, including Shetland, is known for its dense and abundant crimp compared to ordinary sheep. A greater crimp contributes to yarn that is springy, elastic, and voluminous. This volume allows the yarn to trap air effectively, resulting in a yarn that is exceptionally warm and lightweight.
