On Red Hill, at an altitude of over 3,700 meters in Lhasa, a palace with 999 rooms was constructed—the Potala Palace. Built against the mountainside, it now covers an area of 410,000 square meters, with a building area of 130,000 square meters. The main building has 13 floors and stands 115 zhang tall, entirely of stone and wood structure. Five palace roofs are covered with gilded copper tiles, radiating a brilliant golden light and exuding a majestic aura, representing the pinnacle of ancient Tibetan architectural art, hailed as the sacred palace of the plateau. The Potala Palace served as the winter palace for successive Dalai Lamas and the center of political and religious rule for the former Tibetan government. From the Fifth Dalai Lama onwards, significant religious and political ceremonies were held here, and it also housed the stupas of past Dalai Lamas. The Potala Palace is built against the mountain, with layered buildings and towering halls, exuding a majestic presence that seems to rise from the earth and pierce the heavens. Its solid granite walls, the soft, flat white thistle-wool wall coverings, the brilliant golden roofs, and the large gilded vases, banners, and prayer flags with strong decorative effects all shine together. The striking contrast of red, white, and yellow colors, and the layered, nested architectural forms, embody the captivating characteristics of ancient Tibetan architecture. The Potala Palace is an outstanding representative of Tibetan architecture and a masterpiece of world ancient architecture. The Red Palace houses the Dalai Lamas' stupas and various chapels. There are eight stupas in total, the first and largest being that of the Fifth Dalai Lama. According to records, the gold alone used to encase this stupa amounted to over 119,000 taels, and the preserved, treated remains of the Dalai Lama are kept within the stupa. The West Main Hall is the hall of worship for the Fifth Dalai Lama's stupa and is the largest palace within the Red Palace. In addition to the plaque "Yong Lian Chu Di" (The Origin of the Blooming Lotus) bestowed by Emperor Qianlong, a pair of large brocade curtains presented by Emperor Kangxi is preserved here, making them rare treasures within the Potala Palace. Legend has it that Emperor Kangxi specially built a factory to weave these curtains, which took a year to complete. The Dharma King Cave (Songtsen Gampo's meditation cave) is a building from the 7th century and one of the oldest structures in the Potala Palace. It houses statues of Songtsen Gampo, Princess Wencheng, and his ministers. The highest palace in the Red Palace is called Sārsong Lhunpo (meaning Victorious Over the Three Realms), which enshrines a portrait of Emperor Qianlong and a tablet bearing the characters "Wàn Suì" (Long Live). Today, in the eyes of modern people, the Potala Palace, whether in its interlocking stone and wood construction or its rich cultural content, reveals its uniqueness. It seems to leave a deep impression on everyone who visits. The uniform granite walls, the upturned design of wooden roofs and eaves, the all-gold decorative copper tiles, and the embellishments of stupas, vases, makaras, and garudas adorning the ridges all combine perfectly to give the entire palace a resplendent appearance. The murals within the main halls are also a unique feature of the Potala Palace. This magnificent gallery of pictorial art records the history of Tibetan Buddhism, the life of the Fifth Dalai Lama, Princess Wencheng's journey to Tibet, as well as depictions of ancient Tibetan architecture and numerous Buddha and Vajra images. It can truly be considered a precious scroll of Buddhist history. Among the gleaming golden roofs of the Potala Palace, the highest one in the center is the Hall of Avalokitesvara. Its position among the many halls of the Potala Palace is extraordinary because of its profound connection to the palace. As we know, the word "Potala" is a transliteration from Sanskrit, meaning the Holy Land of Avalokitesvara. The Hall of Avalokitesvara enshrines a statue of Avalokitesvara, and Songtsen Gampo considered himself an emanation of Avalokitesvara. He resided and meditated for extended periods in the Dharma King Cave directly below the Avalokitesvara Hall.
