I first visited Taichung in 2012. I arrived at a 100 year old train station, which these days is now a museum. A huge modern station looms behind it. As far as urban development goes, perhaps only Kaohsiung is changing as quickly as Taichung is. Entire new districts and an MRT system have been created since my first trip!
A lot of people see Taichung as a bit of a nowhere place to pass by on the way to other parts of Taiwan. However, now I’ve looked at pretty much every corner of the city, I’d have to say they’re wrong. The area around the train station is a mix of interesting historic buildings and southeast Asian restaurants and shops. The ruins of Taichung’s 1960s-80’s boom and then collapse are here too and there are some imposing retro-future buildings that are now home to huge graffiti murals. With the opening of the new station this area has begun to improve and in ten years it may look quite different. To the east and south of the station are remnants of the city’s Japanese past, including a brewery and martial arts hall. One of the country’s best fine arts museums is here too. The rest of the city has old military villages, abandoned mansions, pretty shophouses, and a dense mesh of skyscrapers towards the west. I visited with the aim of just seeing some friends but with every trip I found something new, until I found myself planning a drawing and looking forward to exploring more thoroughly. I finished it in 2013.
By 2021 the city had changed a lot. Like I had done with Taipei previously I added most of the new structures and created a second edition. This will be the final edition.
I print on archival fine art paper.
This material reproduces the finest details perfectly and with good care they will last over a century.
Custom sizing is possible so whether you're looking for a large centerpiece or a detailed work for an alcove I can make it a perfect fit.
All prints will be signed and numbered. The edition size is limited to 100 in total (all sizes)
