Born in Edo (present-day Tokyo) into a firefighter's family, he became a student of the Ukiyo-e master Utagawa Toyohiro in 1811. His series of 55 landscape prints, "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō," created between 1833 and 1834, established his reputation as one of the most popular Ukiyo-e artists of all time. Due to overwhelming demand for his landscape paintings, mass production led to a decline in quality. He created over 5,000 paintings and reproduced 10,000 prints from some of his woodblock works. His talent was first recognized by Western Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters, from whom he was also greatly influenced. Hiroshige's style is approachable and refined, with a delicate touch, making him a household name in Japan at the time.
