They inhabit tropical to subtropical coastal, nearshore, and open ocean waters across the three major oceans. They can be found in the waters surrounding Taiwan. Despite their massive size, whale sharks are gentle creatures that feed on plankton, small fish, shrimp, algae, and seaweed. They are ovoviviparous, and a female carrying 300 pups was once found in Taiwan's waters, making them one of the most prolific shark species known. Due to human fishing activities, the whale shark population has declined significantly. Taiwan implemented a complete ban on fishing and selling them in 2008, and the IUCN listed them as an endangered species in 2016.
