It is the largest fish in the world, capable of reaching up to 20 meters in length. They inhabit coastal, nearshore, and offshore waters of tropical to subtropical regions across the three major oceans. Their presence has been noted in the waters surrounding Taiwan. Despite their immense size, whale sharks feed on plankton, small fish, shrimp, algae, and seagrass, and possess a gentle nature. They are ovoviviparous. A pregnant female shark carrying 300 pups was once discovered in Taiwanese waters, identifying it as the most prolific shark species known to date. Due to human fishing practices, whale shark populations have drastically declined. Taiwan implemented a complete ban on fishing and selling them in 2008. In 2016, the IUCN assessed their status as Endangered.
