The Fading Art of Freehand Embroidery
Most of the embroidery on Pangandaran bags is created using a freehand embroidery machine.
You might wonder how freehand embroidery differs from standard machine embroidery. Standard machine embroidery relies on a machine that reads an embroidery pattern and automatically stitches it, resulting in perfectly uniform and identical designs.
In contrast, freehand embroidery is an artisan skill where the craftsperson manually moves the fabric to create the design. Because it's human-made, each piece possesses a unique character. No two embroidered designs are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture reminiscent of hand-embroidery. The process involves transferring a sketch to the fabric and then, while referencing the original artwork, stitching in sync with the up-and-down motion of the sewing machine needle – a remarkable craft that's impressive even to imagine.
Currently, there are fewer than 400 people in Vietnam who can perform freehand embroidery. Of these, only about 50 work professionally. Furthermore, a mere 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of embroidery certification. Among them, only 10 can execute the intricate designs required by Pangandaran. However, skill alone isn't enough; embroidery requires a sense of style. Subtle nuances can significantly alter the overall impression.
For this reason, Pangandaran collaborates with Hun, an artisan with exceptional talent. Hun, currently 46 years old, has been practicing this craft since the age of 15, boasting 31 years of experience. Moreover, his sense of style is truly outstanding, earning our complete trust.
With Vietnam's economic development, traditional crafts, like many others, face challenging circumstances. Since 2000, the number of individuals capable of freehand embroidery has rapidly declined, and there are no younger generations currently learning this skill.
It is anticipated that the number of artisans will continue to decrease, and Vietnam's freehand embroidery is on the verge of disappearing within the next decade or so.
In this video, we were fortunate to have the master artisan Hun create the "Sudden Rain Embroidery."
Witness the beauty of embroidery brought to life with his assured technique.
