We often get asked, "How is shuttle embroidery different from regular machine embroidery?" Standard machine embroidery is automated; the machine reads the design and stitches it automatically, ensuring every piece is identical. Shuttle embroidery, however, is a craft where an artisan manually moves the fabric to create the design. Because it's made by hand, each piece has its own unique character. No two embroidered designs are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that resembles hand-stitching. The process involves transferring the sketch onto the fabric and, while referencing the original artwork, the artisan guides the needle's movement – a truly remarkable skill. In Vietnam today, there are only about 400 people who can perform shuttle embroidery. Of these, only 50 work professionally. Furthermore, just 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of embroidery certification. Among them, only 10 possess the skill to execute Pangandaran's intricate designs. But being skilled isn't enough; embroidery requires a sense of style. Subtle nuances can significantly alter the overall impression. This is why we entrust our embroidery to Hun, an artisan with exceptional talent. Hun, currently 46 years old, has been embroidering since the age of 15, bringing 31 years of dedicated experience to his craft. His artistic sensibility is truly outstanding, and we have complete faith in his abilities. Due to recent economic development, traditional crafts in Vietnam, like elsewhere, face challenging times. Since 2000, the number of shuttle embroidery artisans has been rapidly declining, and there are virtually no young people learning this skill today. With the number of artisans expected to decrease further, shuttle embroidery in Vietnam is facing an uncertain future, potentially disappearing within the next decade or so.
