You might often wonder, "How is shuttle embroidery different from regular machine embroidery?" Standard machine embroidery involves a machine reading an embroidery design and automatically stitching it. This results in perfectly uniform, identical embroidery every time. In contrast, 《shuttle embroidery》 is a craft where an artisan manually moves the fabric while stitching the design. Because it's created by human hands, each piece possesses a unique character. No two embroidered designs are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that closely resembles hand-embroidery. The process involves transferring the sketch to the fabric and, while referencing the original artwork, stitching in sync with the up-and-down motion of the sewing machine needle – a truly remarkable skill that's incredible just to imagine. Currently, there are only a little over 400 people in Vietnam who can perform shuttle embroidery. Of these, only about 50 work professionally. Furthermore, a mere 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of embroidery certification. Among them, only 10 can execute the intricate designs required by Pangandaran. However, being skilled isn't enough; embroidery also requires artistic sensibility. Subtle nuances can significantly alter the overall impression. Therefore, at Pangandaran, we entrust our work to Hun, who possesses the highest level of expertise. Hun, now 46, has been embroidering since the age of 15, giving him 31 years of experience. Moreover, he has an exceptional sense of design. We place our complete trust in him. With Vietnam's economic development, traditional crafts, like many elsewhere, face challenging circumstances. Since 2000, the number of individuals capable of shuttle embroidery has been rapidly declining, and there are virtually no young people learning this skill today. As the number of artisans is expected to decrease further, shuttle embroidery in Vietnam is facing a precarious future, potentially disappearing within the next decade or so.
