**Giant Oceanic Manta Ray**
The Giant Oceanic Manta Ray is the largest ray species in the world. Known for their gentle nature, adult manta rays can reach a wingspan of 9 meters and weigh up to 3 metric tons. They inhabit a wide range of tropical and subtropical waters across major oceans.
Manta ray meat is not considered palatable, but according to traditional Chinese medicine, their gill rakers are believed to possess medicinal properties, capable of treating conditions like cancer and infertility. This belief has led to their extensive hunting by humans. Manta rays are ovoviviparous, giving birth to only one pup at a time, resulting in slow reproduction rates that cannot keep pace with the speed of hunting.
**IUCN Status: Vulnerable (VU)**
