▪ The Origin of the [Five-Color Thread]
The five-color thread, also known as the "five-viscera thread" or "longevity thread," is also called a vajra thread. Its characteristic is being woven from five different colored fine threads into a "cord." The five colors "yellow, cyan, white, black, and red" represent the Chinese Five Elements—Earth, Wood, Metal, Water, and Fire; as well as the "Five Directions"—Center, East, West, North, and South. Therefore, it is believed in folklore to ward off plagues from all directions, evil spirits of the seasons, and the harm of the five poisons. It is also known as "five-color silk" or "five-color strands." From Song dynasty poetry, it is known that this item for warding off evil became an adornment and a symbol of love and union, also called "concentric hundred cords." In some parts of China, wearing it from the Dragon Boat Festival extends to the Qixi Festival, evolving into the "Daughter's Festival" where pomegranate flowers are worn with colorful silk threads. Due to regional customs, the North often calls it a "concentric cord" or "union thread," while the South, to ward off evil and pray for blessings, favors the names "longevity thread" and "life-extending thread."
The foundational scripture of Tang Mī, the *Vairocanābhisaṃbodhi Sūtra*, details the cultivation method of the "Vajra Thread Dharma." "To make a cord, one must select the finest silk threads, wash them with fragrant water until extremely pure, have a pure maiden twine them together, combining five colors of threads. Each of the Five Tathāgata mantras must be used to hold one color, and then the mantra for the completion of all affairs is used to empower them all." The five colors, also known as the "Five Tathāgata Colors"—white, red, yellow, blue (cyan), and black—are empowered by the mantras of Vairocana Buddha, Ratnaketu Buddha, Amoghasiddhi Buddha, Amitābha Buddha, and Dundubhiśvara Buddha, respectively. The five colors also represent the Five Wisdoms of the Tathāgatas—faith, diligence, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom. This practice requires a master to perform rituals, tie three knots into the cord, forming a vajra knot, and wear it on their left arm, as well as on the arms of disciples who have entered the mandala and received the Dharma, to empower the disciples to be free from obstacles and increase the five roots of goodness.
💎 missla Jewelry | Jadeite Culture and Shopping Guide
"A person nurtures jade for three years, and jade nurtures a person for a lifetime."
Ancient people valued wearing jade, often saying, "Gold has a price, but jade is priceless."
Jade, naturally formed over time, its warm luster and delicate texture,
make it a symbol of virtue and auspiciousness in Eastern culture.
With the passage of time and different wearing habits, jade exhibits a unique appearance and radiance that belongs to each owner,
thus it is often seen as a cultural symbol accompanying one through life's journey.
Jadeite, hidden within the raw jade, exudes a tranquil and warm temperament.
It is understated, profound, and enduring, not just an adornment but also a symbol of sincere blessings.
Different patterns and carvings carry their own unique meanings in folk culture,
symbolizing peace, fulfillment, prosperity, and smooth sailing in life. Understanding the cultural significance before gifting can make the "message reach the object," adding more thoughtfulness and warmth to the blessings.
There is also a folk saying about women wearing jade: "Wearing jade before marriage creates good 缘 (yuan - fate/affinity), wearing jade after marriage adds fulfillment."
This is a sharing of traditional cultural symbolism.
