**Formosan Clouded Leopard**
The Formosan Clouded Leopard was once the largest carnivorous animal on Taiwan's main island. During the Japanese colonial era, it was also known as the "Takasago Leopard." By that time, its numbers were already quite scarce. These leopards typically measured 60 to 100 cm in length and weighed around 16 to 23 kg, with tails almost as long as their bodies. Their usual prey included macaques, Formosan barking deer, and squirrels.
First documented by Western naturalist Robert Swinhoe in 1862, the Formosan Clouded Leopard was officially declared extinct in 2014. Although there have been subsequent alleged sightings, none have ever been verified, making it uncertain if the individuals seen were indeed clouded leopards. The clouded leopards currently housed in zoos are subspecies imported from other countries.
**IUCN Status: Extinct (EX)**
