During the Japanese colonial era, it was also known as the "Takasago Leopard." By that time, its numbers were already quite scarce. These leopards typically measured 60 to 100 cm in length and weighed around 16 to 23 kg, with tails almost as long as their bodies. Their usual prey included macaques, Formosan barking deer, and squirrels. First documented by Western naturalist Robert Swinhoe in 1862, the Formosan Clouded Leopard was officially declared extinct in 2014.
