🌞 Beginner Experience - Workshop Description

This beginner-friendly workshop is designed for those who wish to experience leather crafting without a significant time commitment. It offers a relaxed approach to creating leather goods, perfect for individuals new to handmade leather or those looking to create a heartfelt gift. We've prepared the materials, with the project already about 70% complete, making the experience straightforward and enjoyable. The only techniques you'll learn are 'punching stitch holes with a diamond chisel' and 'hand-stitching with two needles,' fundamental skills in leathercraft. Other crafting details are handled by the studio.
Using the ID card holder as an example, we will pre-apply the protective film, polish the leather edges, and complete the initial stitching that secures the film. All leather pieces will be assembled and adhered, leaving you to complete the final round of stitching. While it may seem simple, our years of teaching experience show that beginners typically need 1.5 to 2.5 hours or more to complete it.

🌞 Material Description

This item is crafted from vegetable-tanned cowhide. Vegetable-tanned leather is known for its firm texture and durability. In Taiwan's early days, before plastics were widespread, vegetable-tanned cowhide was used in many products, such as drive belts for sewing machines, bicycle saddles, agricultural tools, and military accessory components.

A characteristic of vegetable-tanned leather is its color transformation due to the plant-based tannins reacting with air or sunlight, gradually deepening its hue. Coupled with the natural oils from your hands and friction from daily use, it develops a lustrous patina over time. This allows leather goods made from vegetable-tanned hides to evolve uniquely with time and user habits. We believe these changes are a testament to the shared journey between the user and the leather item, which is why many handmade leather enthusiasts favor vegetable-tanned cowhide.

Cattle are not primarily raised for their hides; they are raised for meat or dairy production. Leather is a byproduct of the livestock industry. Therefore, farmers do not focus on protecting the cattle's skin. During their lives, cattle may experience insect bites, scratches, or puncture wounds. Free-roaming cattle might bear branding marks, and as they grow, their skin develops lines and wrinkles. In cases of difficult births, there might be surgical scars. During the process of harvesting the meat, skinning can also result in knife marks. These marks are faithfully preserved on the leather when it's processed, serving as a record of the animal's life. Therefore, if you notice such marks on leather goods, rest assured that it is 100% genuine leather without artificial finishes.

Many Taiwanese leather brands tend to avoid vegetable-tanned leather with natural markings, often opting for processing that sands the surface and applies a heavy topcoat for a clean finish. However, this strips away the natural character. At DOZI Leather Craft, we embrace these natural markings from the cow's life. Unless they are excessively large, we do not avoid using them in our creations. As the leather deepens in color and develops a patina through use, these marks, combined with signs of wear, contribute to the unique character of the piece.

🌞 Care and Maintenance

Frequent use is the best form of maintenance. It is important to avoid storing leather in humid environments. If the leather accidentally gets wet, wipe it immediately with a dry cloth and allow it to air dry in a cool, shaded area. Do not expose it to direct sunlight, as this can cause the leather to harden and degrade. Once dry, you can apply leather conditioner to replenish its oils. A waterproof spray can also be applied to protect against accidental spills and enhance surface protection. For storage or long periods of non-use, place the item in a dehumidifying cabinet set to 50%-60% humidity to prevent mold, or use a sealed bag with a desiccant for a similar effect. During storage, regularly apply maintenance oil to prevent the leather surface from cracking due to dryness.

1. Appointment slots indicate your *preferred class time*. A dedicated staff member will contact you to confirm the actual class time, which may be adjusted based on instructor availability and material preparation. If we cannot accommodate your preferred time due to our factors, all fees will be fully refunded. In case of cancellation due to force majeure events such as weather, government orders, pandemics, or natural disasters, your payment will be held, and we will coordinate a new class time.
2. This booking is for private lessons at a fixed location. For corporate events, school groups, business organizations, or brand activities requiring an instructor to come to your venue, please contact us directly to discuss arrangements. Do not book here.
3. On-site workshops offer DIY stamping with letters, numbers, and symbols. Additional services like *laser engraving* and *hot foil stamping* must be completed before leather piece assembly and are therefore not available for workshop bookings.
4. Products are covered by a one-year warranty from the date of purchase, offering free repairs and maintenance at our store for defects not caused by human error. After one year, free leather maintenance will still be provided, with a nominal fee for repairs.
5. Our studio prefers natural leather materials. Cowhide is not heavily processed or coated, so minor variations in color, texture, and minor scars are to be expected. If you require a perfectly flawless surface, this may be difficult to achieve, and we regret that requests for "flawless leather" cannot be accommodated. Should you have different ideas or requirements for the workshop materials on-site, you may reschedule your class, but we cannot offer compensation for travel expenses.
