"The more local, the more fashionable."
The "Jia Zhi Dai" (茄芷袋), originally pronounced "Ga-ji" in Taiwanese (phonetically similar to "Ga-gee"), also known as "Ga-jian-zai" or "Fu Gu Dai" (retro bag), is a uniquely Taiwanese tote bag. Its name is derived from the Japanese term "kagiami," referring to its weaving technique. Legend has it that the Jia Zhi Dai originated in the Jingliao area of Houbi District, Tainan City, initially handcrafted from bulrush. As Taiwan industrialized, it evolved to be made from the commonly seen three-color nylon mesh fabric. Its soft, waterproof, and durable nature, combined with its affordability, has made it a must-buy local souvenir for many tourists visiting Taiwan.
