Native Hong Kong Camellias
Hong Kong has its own native camellias, such as "Hong Kong Tea" and "Big-Bracted Camellia." Today, both are listed on the IUCN Red List, with "Hong Kong Tea" assessed as endangered.
"Hong Kong Tea" was first discovered in 1849 by Lieutenant Colonel Eyre, J., Roy of the British Army stationed in Hong Kong. It is a native Hong Kong species characterized by its red flowers. In 1955, Liu Song-bin of the Department of Agriculture and Forestry discovered another native Hong Kong tea species, "Big-Bracted Camellia," on Tai Mo Shan. It was named after the then Governor of Hong Kong, Sir Alexander Grantham, and is also known as Grantham's Camellia. Today, "Hong Kong Tea," "Big-Bracted Camellia," and *Camellia euphlebia* are all included in the book "Rare and Precious Plants of Hong Kong" published by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.
