Shui Fei Sand, Emperor Sand, Zi Jin Sand, and Crystal Sand are all high-content quality cinnabar. Their **main differences lie in color, texture, hardness, and manufacturing methods**.
"Shui Fei Sand"
True red of Chinese red, with a slight orange tint. The surface has a warm matte effect, which will become brighter with wear, forming a patina.
The manufacturing method involves repeatedly grinding fine cinnabar particles into a paste, stirring with water, collecting the upper "turbid liquid" after settling, and then letting it settle again (i.e., purification by water flotation). The cinnabar mud at the bottom is air-dried and then pressed using ancient methods. Even on the internal cross-section, uniform fine mineral flashes can be seen.
"Emperor Sand"
The color is closer to true red, with a brighter hue and higher hardness.
The manufacturing method involves multiple processes such as crushing/grinding/magnetic separation/water flotation/high polishing from natural cinnabar ore, followed by ancient pressing methods. Emperor Sand has almost no mineral flashes on the surface, but has them internally. The surface uses a **high polishing** process to present a metallic texture, especially in sunlight, where the metallic feel is maximized.
"Zi Jin Sand"
The color is purplish-red, and the hardness is slightly lower than Emperor Sand.
The manufacturing method involves multiple processes such as crushing/grinding/screening from natural cinnabar ore, but **without water flotation purification**. Therefore, the surface is not as fine, and there are scattered small mineral flashes, giving a "starry sky" appearance.
"Crystal Sand"
The color is purplish-red and translucent.
Large cinnabar particles are directly chipped from the cinnabar ore. The crystal particles are clearly visible on the surface. Under light, each particle is transparent and emits a fluorescent red glow.

> Cinnabar
In the earliest written records, cinnabar had only one character, "丹" (dān). "丹" is an ideogrammic compound. Ancient people mined in wells, and extracted minerals from the wells. Therefore, the character "丹" is actually the character "井" (jǐng - well) with a dot in the middle, signifying that after digging a mine, something was extracted from it, and this something was cinnabar.
Because cinnabar is red, mostly a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, cinnabar was called "朱砂" (zhūshā). "丹" and "朱" describe the color, and "砂" describes the shape, meaning irregular granular minerals.
The color of cinnabar is unfading. Chinese calligraphy and painting are called "丹青" (dānqīng), where "丹" refers to cinnabar. An indispensable component of pigments, "八宝印泥" (bābǎo yīnnī - eight-treasure ink pad), also has cinnabar as its main ingredient.
From a feng shui perspective, cinnabar is collected from minerals that gather the essence of the sun and moon, and it absorbs the positive energy of heaven and earth. Therefore, cinnabar possesses an extremely strong yang magnetic field. We can observe that jade feels cool in the hand, while cinnabar feels warm.
Since ancient times, cinnabar has been used in various Taoist practices such as drawing talismans, consecrating objects, warding off evil, and calming spirits. Cinnabar has always been regarded as a supreme treasure for bringing good luck, changing fortunes, suppressing malevolent forces, driving away evil spirits, attracting blessings, and accumulating wealth. It carries auspicious meanings of immense good fortune, wealth, and health.
The "Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing" (Classic of Materia Medica) lists cinnabar as a superior medicinal substance, often used in treatments for calming fright, detoxifying, and alleviating insomnia and excessive dreaming.
Living in modern times, owning one or two cinnabar crafts can also cultivate one's character and soothe the eyes and mind.
> Identification
All cinnabar products in this store are high-content cinnabar with a strong sense of weight. You can use the following methods for identification:
>. Burning cinnabar will turn it black. (Please heat it through an intermediary. It is generally not recommended to directly burn finished products as you cannot control the time and area. If it turns black after prolonged heating, it cannot be restored.)
>. True cinnabar can draw orange-red lines on paper. (To avoid damaging the appearance of finished products, please choose an inconspicuous area to draw the line, or use the complimentary bead to draw the line.)
> Maintenance
Cinnabar jewelry, if it does not contain metal or plant-based accessories (such as wood, bamboo, bodhi seeds, etc.), can be lightly splashed with water, but it is not suitable for prolonged soaking, as this will affect its luster.
It is not recommended to get the braided cord wet. After cleaning, it should be air-dried before wearing, as a damp cord will carry excessive moisture, which is not good for the body.
1. Avoid Corrosion
Cinnabar is a mineral and does not dissolve in water, but frequent contact with chemicals such as soap and shower gel can corrode cinnabar.
2. Avoid Contact with Metal Objects
The mineral elements in cinnabar absorb metal ions, causing irreversible dulling and blackening of the cinnabar.
3. Avoid High Temperatures
The mercuric sulfide in cinnabar only releases at temperatures of 380 degrees Celsius. Therefore, as long as cinnabar jewelry is kept away from high-temperature environments, it can be worn with confidence.
4. Avoid Collisions with Hard or Sharp Objects.
Cinnabar has high hardness but is brittle, so be careful to prevent drops.
5. How to Clean
If you find that the cinnabar is dirty, do not soak it in water, as this will change the original luster of the cinnabar! You can wipe it a few times with a slightly damp cotton cloth and let it air dry for a while.
6. Oiling for Maintenance
Apply a layer of white tea oil or olive oil to the finished product, allowing the stone surface to absorb the oil, making it more crystal clear and bright. If you apply oil and then seal it in a brocade box, you can wrap it with a common plastic wrap to prevent the oil from staining the brocade box's velvet lining.
7. Frequent Handling
Frequently handle the cinnabar jewelry worn on your body with your hands, allowing a very thin layer of oil to adhere to the stone surface, which will make it appear more antique and elegant over time.
The physical item is more delicate and beautiful than the photos.
