|About paper mulberry bark craft|

Paulownia is a native species of Taiwan, mainly distributed in plains to low-altitude mountainous areas. It has strong reproductive and growth capabilities in open land with plenty of sunlight. You can see it all over Taiwan, on the roadside, in parks, or in many idle spaces. In the past, paper mulberry tree bark was a good raw material for printing rice paper, cotton paper and banknotes because its bark is rich in fiber. The entire plant secretes a latex that can be made into a paste. The bark fiber of the paper mulberry tree has very good ductility. In the traditional Aboriginal craft, the fiber is stretched and made into cloth by beating it with a wooden mallet for daily wear.

When collecting paulownia trees, you need to first preset the items you want to make, select paulownia branches of appropriate thickness, and then saw off the branches. The paper mulberry tree grows vigorously and can continue to grow through sprouting or side buds after its branches are cut off. Within a year, the paper mulberry tree can grow to a height of more than three meters.
The bark of the paper mulberry tree has various patterns and colors. The natural texture change is one of the important creative elements in paper mulberry craftsmanship.

The bark fiber of paper mulberry has unique ductility, which is a characteristic that the bark of other tree species does not necessarily possess. After the bark is soaked, it is struck with a hammer and the brown surface bark cracks, exposing the inner, ductile white bark fibers. During the beating process, the fibers will gradually stretch laterally. The more times they are struck, the greater the stretch, and the bark will become thinner and softer. After repeated hammering, the bark can stretch to 4 to 5 times its original width.
By changing the number and direction of the tapping, bark cloth with different textures and appearances can be produced. Once the beating is complete, the bark is dried and used as cloth.

Black Eternal is a design brand with bark fiber craftsmanship as its core. The team consists of four people, who are rooted in the culture of the Paiwan and Rukai people.
We believe that culture is fluid, and only by practicing and continuing it in daily life can it be naturally integrated into life and become a part of us. Rethinking the relationship with the land, we discovered that the essence of life culture comes from the collection and use of nature. In this familiar yet unfamiliar environment, we rediscovered the paper mulberry tree, a plant that our ancestors once used to make cloth but is now considered useless. We choose to recover this ancient wisdom and rediscover its value through the collection, design and production of tree bark, turning it into home accessories such as furniture and lighting, so that traditional crafts can be integrated into modern life in a sustainable way.
The timeless black is our study and practice of the land lifestyle. We hope that when people touch the works, they can not only feel the natural texture of the mulberry tree, but also experience the process from collection to creation - exploring life through physical practice, regaining the connection with the land, and allowing culture to continue over time.
