Unsodo was founded in the 24th year of the Meiji era (1891) as a publisher of art books utilizing woodblock printing techniques. The company name originates from a calligraphy gifted by the literati painter Tessai Tomioka, which read "Gei, a fragrant herb." "Gei" (芸) refers to fragrant rue, a perennial herb of the Rutaceae family; its Chinese name is "Yúnxiāng," and it is a homophone for the simplified character "芸" used in the company's name. In the 7th year of the Taisho era (1918), the Tokyo branch was established, engaging in the publication of reference books and photo collections for patterns used in kimono accessories and crafts, as well as the production of woodblock prints for appreciation. Today, only a handful of woodblock printing publishers remain in Kyoto and Tokyo. Among them, Unsodo is the sole publisher in Japan that issues hand-pulled woodblock print *wafuku* (Japanese binding) books and continues to produce reproductions of numerous works.
