In Japan in the 1920s, most of the watches sold were pocket watches imported from abroad. The predecessor of CITIZEN, "Shang Gongsha Timepiece Research Institute" was determined to create a product that could compete with it, and released its own pocket watch in 1924. As a starting product, this pocket watch was high-spirited, but missing a name. So the institute invited the then mayor of Tokyo, Shinpei Goto, to make suggestions. The name he proposed is "CITIZEN". Through the meaning of the word, he hopes that everyone and many citizens can use and cherish this pocket watch for a long time.
