Many parents like to document their child’s growth, especially height. As a father myself, however, I struggled to find a height chart that truly fit a home’s overall aesthetic. Most designs rely on cute animals, flowers, insects, or cartoon characters, which often limit where they can be displayed—typically only in a child’s bedroom or playroom, rather than in shared family spaces.
For this reason, I designed an illustrated Taiwanese mushroom field guide that also functions as a simple height-measuring poster. It blends naturally into walls in the entryway, living room, dining area, or bedroom, without feeling out of place.
This series features illustrations of 30 Taiwanese mushroom species.
The top of each mushroom represents a 3 cm height increment, replacing the clutter of numbers and tick marks.
Growth details
Understanding parents’ desire for precision, the background includes subtle light-gray micro markers at 1 cm intervals, covering a measuring range from 85 cm to 180 cm.
Hidden mushroom detail
Among Taiwan’s fungi is a species known as the glowing mushroom, which emits light at night and can only be found in bamboo forests in select mountainous areas of Chiayi, Tainan, Kenting, and eastern Taiwan. To reflect this unique characteristic, we applied photoluminescent ink to this mushroom, allowing it to glow softly at night and accompany a child’s growth.
A playful way to record growth
To keep records unobtrusive, we designed transparent marking stickers for parents to note dates and heights (please use an oil-based pen).
An illustrated botanical guide
Each mushroom illustration begins at the tip and concludes with its scientific name. We aimed to present the piece as an illustrated mushroom guide, so the scientific names of all species are listed below.
Material selection
After testing nearly ten types of paper, we chose 220 gsm Ivory Art Paper for its rich color reproduction and warm, substantial feel. A water-based matte finish was applied to preserve the paper’s character while reducing smudging and abrasion.
