French Belle Époque Period | European Walnut Multi-Tier Expanding Jewelry/Sewing Box
This is an exquisite expanding wooden box from the French Belle Époque era (circa 1890). Its structure features the quintessential dual-scissor brass linkage design, opening symmetrically from the center like unfolding mechanical petals, blending artisanal beauty with practical function.
Crafted from European walnut, the box showcases fine, warm wood grain. Centuries of oxidation have imbued it with a deep chocolate-brown patina, offering a stable and elegant texture. Lined with red velvet, it originally served as a lady's jewelry box but was also commonly used as a high-end sewing notions box or for storing personal treasures.
The interior is configured with three tiers: "one large and two small."
A central, elongated main compartment is flanked by two smaller boxes, each with a flip-top lid. The top of each small box is adorned with four brass rivets, symmetrically arranged. These not only reinforce the structure but also create a decorative rhythm with an artisanal feel, a common design detail in French boxes of the late 19th century.
The exterior is fitted with four brass ring pulls, a common hardware component of the late 19th century. The main lid lifts from the front, while the side compartments can be accessed by pulling them open. Operable from the front, back, and sides, the box's dynamic structure is fluid and graceful, fully embodying the Belle Époque era's high regard for mechanical design and functional aesthetics.
Dimensions (excluding ring pulls):
Closed: Approximately 23 × 12 × 12 cm (H)
Expanded (excluding flip lids): Approximately 42.7 × 12 cm
Fully functional, but as an antique, it bears historical marks. Please purchase only if you accept this condition.
