🌞 Beginner's Experience – Course Description

This introductory course is designed for those who prefer a more relaxed approach to leather crafting, without a significant time commitment. It's ideal for beginners who have never made a leather item before or anyone looking to create a heartfelt gift. The studio prepares about 70% of the materials, making the leather crafting experience straightforward and enjoyable. The only techniques you'll learn are "punching stitching holes with a diamond chisel" and "professional saddle stitching with two needles" – fundamental skills in handcrafting leather. The studio handles all other intricate details.
Using the included ID card holder as an example, we'll pre-apply the protective film, smooth and finish the leather edges, and even stitch the preliminary seams to secure the film. All leather pieces will be assembled and glued, leaving you to complete the final stitches. While seemingly simple, our years of teaching experience indicate that beginners typically take 1.5 to 2.5 hours or more to complete the project.

🌞 Material Description

This item is crafted from vegetable-tanned cowhide. Vegetable-tanned leather is known for its firm texture and durability. In Taiwan's early days, before the widespread availability of plastic, vegetable-tanned cowhide was used in many products, such as drive belts for early sewing machines, bicycle saddles, agricultural tools, and military accessories.

A characteristic of vegetable-tanned leather is how its color deepens over time due to the natural tannins reacting with air and sunlight. The surface color gradually darkens. Furthermore, the oils from your hands and friction from daily use create a lustrous patina. This allows leather goods made from vegetable-tanned leather to transform uniquely with time and user habits. We believe these changes are a testament to the shared journey between the user and the leather, which is why many handmade leather enthusiasts adore vegetable-tanned leather.

Cattle are not raised primarily for their hides; their main purpose is for meat or dairy production. Leather is a byproduct of the livestock industry. As such, farmers do not focus on protecting the cattle's skin. Consequently, during their lives, cattle may experience insect bites, scratches, or punctures. Free-roaming cattle might bear brands, and growth lines and wrinkles are natural as they mature. In cases of difficult births, caesarean sections may leave surgical scars. During the process of slaughtering mature cattle for meat, skinning can result in knife marks. These marks are faithfully preserved on the leather when it's processed, serving as a testament to the animal's life. Therefore, if you notice such marks on leather goods, rest assured, it is 100% genuine leather, free from additives (surface coatings).

Many Taiwanese leather brands tend to avoid vegetable-tanned leather with natural markings. They often have it sanded and surface-coated, resulting in a clean appearance but sacrificing its natural character. At DOZI Leather Craft, we embrace these natural markings of the cowhide. Unless they are excessively large, we do not deliberately avoid them during production. As the leather darkens and develops a patina over time with use, these original marks, along with signs of wear, contribute to the unique character of the piece.

The photos display the actual leather colors. Minor variations may occur due to lighting and screen display differences. To avoid any discrepancies, you are welcome to request a leather sample free of charge.

🌞 Care and Maintenance

Regular use is the best form of maintenance. Avoid storing leather in damp environments. If the leather accidentally gets wet, immediately wipe it dry with a clean cloth and let it air dry in a cool, well-ventilated area. Do not expose it to direct sunlight, as this can cause the leather to harden and degrade. Once dry, apply leather conditioner to replenish its oils. You can also spray a waterproofing agent to protect against accidental spills and enhance surface protection. For storage or prolonged periods of non-use, place the item in an electronic dehumidifier, maintaining humidity between 50%-60% to prevent mold. Alternatively, a sealed bag with a desiccant pack can achieve similar results. During storage, regularly apply leather conditioner to prevent cracking due to dryness.

1. Your selected appointment time indicates your *preferred* slot. A dedicated staff member will contact you to confirm the actual class time, which may be adjusted based on instructor availability and material preparation. If we cannot accommodate your preferred time due to our scheduling, a full refund will be issued. In cases of inclement weather, government orders, pandemics, natural disasters, or other uncontrollable circumstances preventing the class, your payment will be held, and a new time will be coordinated.
2. This booking is for individual classes held at our fixed location. For corporate events, school groups, brand activities, etc., where our staff are required to travel to your venue, please contact us directly for separate arrangements. Do not proceed with booking here.
3. On-site instruction includes complimentary letter stamp customization, allowing you to stamp uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols yourself. Value-added services such as "laser engraving" and "hot foil stamping" must be completed before leather pieces are assembled and therefore cannot be accommodated during class bookings.
4. The product warranty covers repairs and maintenance at our store for one year from the purchase date. Excluding human-induced damage, no additional repair fees will be charged. After one year, we continue to offer complimentary leather maintenance. For repairs beyond the warranty period, a nominal labor fee will apply.
5. We favor natural leather materials. Our cowhide is minimally processed with reduced grinding and heavy surface coatings. As a result, slight variations in color, texture, and minor scars are inherent. If you require a perfectly flawless surface, this might be challenging to achieve, and we regret that we cannot accommodate requests for "flawless leather." Should you have alternative ideas or needs regarding the materials for your class, you may reschedule your appointment, but transportation compensation cannot be provided.
