The production of baby pearls requires a very high level of skill and the amount of pearls raised on the beach is very small. 2mm size pearls account for less than 0.01% of the total production of cultured pearls in Japan, 3mm size pearls for 1.5%, 4mm size pearls for 2.5%, and 5mm size pearls for 3.5%. With only 6.5% of the total production, they are extremely rare.
