Paper Mulberry is a native species in Taiwan, primarily found in plains and low-altitude mountainous areas. It thrives in sunny, open spaces with vigorous propagation and growth. It can be seen year-round along roadsides, in parks, or in various vacant lots across Taiwan. Due to its fiber-rich bark, Paper Mulberry was historically a valuable material for producing Xuan paper, rice paper, and currency. The plant secretes latex, which can be used as an adhesive. The fibers of the Paper Mulberry bark are highly extensible. In traditional indigenous craftsmanship, the bark is beaten with a wooden mallet to create a fabric used for everyday clothing.

When harvesting Paper Mulberry, the intended item must be decided in advance. Suitable branches of appropriate thickness are selected and then cut. Paper Mulberry grows vigorously; after cutting branches, it can continue to grow through root suckers or side buds. Within a year, the Paper Mulberry can grow to a height of over three meters.
The bark of the Paper Mulberry exhibits diverse textures and colors. These natural variations are a significant element in the creative process of Paper Mulberry craftsmanship.

The Paper Mulberry bark fiber possesses a unique extensibility, a characteristic not always found in the bark of other tree species. After soaking the bark, it is beaten with a mallet. The outer brown bark splits, revealing the inner, extensible white bark fibers. During the beating process, the fibers gradually stretch horizontally. The more beating, the greater the extension, and the thinner and softer the bark becomes. After repeated beating, the bark can be stretched to 4 to 5 times its original width.
By varying the number and direction of beats, bark cloth with different textures and appearances can be created. After beating, the bark is dried and can be used as fabric.

Lumamiling is a design brand centered around bark fiber craftsmanship, with a team of four members rooted in Paiwan and Rukai indigenous cultures.
We believe that culture is fluid and can only be preserved and continued through daily practice, allowing it to naturally integrate into our lives and become a part of us. By rethinking our relationship with the land, we discover that the foundation of our culture lies in gathering and utilizing nature. In this familiar yet unfamiliar environment, we rediscovered the Paper Mulberry—a plant our ancestors used to make cloth, now often considered useless. We choose to reclaim this ancient wisdom, transforming it through the collection, design, and creation of bark fiber into home decor items such as furniture and lighting. This allows traditional craftsmanship to be sustainably integrated into modern life.
Lumamiling represents our learning and practice of a lifestyle connected to the land. We hope that when people touch our creations, they not only feel the natural texture of the Paper Mulberry but also appreciate the entire process from gathering to creation—exploring life through hands-on experience, reconnecting with the land, and allowing culture to endure through time.
