🌞 Introductory Workshop: Course Details

This introductory course is designed for those who wish to experience leather crafting in a relaxed manner without a significant time commitment. It is ideal for individuals new to handmade leather goods or anyone looking to create a thoughtful, personalized gift. To simplify the process, the studio prepares about 70% of the piece in advance, making the hands-on experience straightforward and enjoyable. The only skills you'll practice are "punching stitching holes with a diamond chisel" and "hand-stitching with a leather double-needle." All other construction details will be handled by the studio.
Using the ID card holder as an example, we will pre-attach the plastic film, smooth the leather edges, and complete the initial stitching that secures the film. All leather components will be assembled and adhered, leaving you to complete the final round of stitching. While it appears simple, our studio's extensive teaching experience indicates that beginners typically require 1.5 to 2.5 hours or more to finish.

🌞 Material Spotlight

This product is crafted from vegetable-tanned cowhide, known for its firm texture and durability. In early Taiwan, before the widespread use of plastics, vegetable-tanned leather was commonly used for products such as drive belts for early sewing machines, bicycle saddles, agricultural tools, and military accessories.

A characteristic of vegetable-tanned leather is its color transformation due to the plant-based tannins reacting with air and sunlight, causing the surface to gradually deepen in hue. Furthermore, natural oils from the user's hands and friction from daily use create a patina, resulting in a lustrous, aged effect. This dynamic evolution, unique to each piece and its owner, is what makes vegetable-tanned leather creations so cherished by handmade leather enthusiasts.

Cattle are primarily raised for meat and dairy, with leather being a byproduct of the livestock industry. Consequently, farmers do not prioritize protecting the animals' skin. During their lives, cattle may sustain marks from insect bites, scratches, or thorns. Free-roaming cattle might bear brands, and natural growth lines and wrinkles are also common. In some cases, scars from C-sections for difficult births may be present. During the process of harvesting the meat, the skinning itself can result in knife marks. These natural imperfections are faithfully preserved on the finished leather, serving as a testament to the animal's life journey. Therefore, any such marks on a leather product are indicators of genuine, unprocessed leather, free from artificial coatings.

Many Taiwanese leather brands prefer not to use vegetable-tanned leather with natural markings, opting instead for processed leather that is sanded and coated for a flawless surface. However, at DOZI Leather Crafts, we embrace these natural characteristics. Unless a mark is excessively large, we incorporate it into our designs. As the leather ages and develops a richer patina with use, these inherent markings, combined with signs of wear, contribute to the unique character of each piece.

🌞 Care and Maintenance

Frequent use is the best form of maintenance. Avoid storing leather in damp environments. If the leather becomes wet, immediately wipe it dry with a clean cloth and allow it to air dry in a cool, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, which can cause hardening or damage. Once dry, apply leather conditioner to replenish oils and consider using a waterproofing spray for protection against accidental spills. For long-term storage, place the item in a dehumidifying cabinet set to 50%-60% humidity to prevent mold, or use a sealed bag with a desiccant packet. Periodically apply leather conditioner during storage to prevent the leather from drying out and cracking.

1. A reserved time slot indicates a preferred class time. Actual class times will be confirmed through direct communication with our staff, subject to instructor availability and material preparation. If we are unable to accommodate your preferred time due to our circumstances, all fees will be refunded. In cases of unavoidable circumstances such as severe weather, government mandates, pandemics, or natural disasters, fees will be held, and a new class time will be arranged.
2. This booking is for individual classes held at our studio. For corporate events, school group activities, or brand events requiring on-site instruction, please contact us separately to arrange a customized session. Do not book through this platform.
3. On-site workshops include complimentary DIY stamping with uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Additional services such as "laser engraving" and "hot foil stamping" must be completed before leather components are assembled and are therefore not available for workshop bookings.
4. The product comes with a one-year warranty from the date of purchase, covering repairs and maintenance at our store. Excluding damage caused by human error, no repair fees will be charged. After one year, we continue to offer complimentary leather maintenance services, with a nominal fee for repairs.
5. Our studio favors natural leather materials. The cowhide used may exhibit variations in color, texture, and minor imperfections, as it is not excessively processed or heavily coated. If a perfectly flawless surface is a requirement, this item may not be suitable. We regret that we cannot accommodate requests for "flawless leather surfaces." If you have specific preferences or requirements regarding the materials during your on-site lesson, we can arrange to reschedule your session, but transportation costs cannot be compensated.
