The heartwood possesses strong decay resistance, making it one of the most durable woods, even in corrosive environments. The sapwood of black walnut is pale brown, while the heartwood ranges from light brown to deep chocolate, occasionally showing purple or darker streaks. The grain is typically straight, sometimes wavy or curled, and quarter-sawn surfaces reveal beautiful parabolic patterns, known as "cathedrals," creating visually pleasing decorative designs. Black walnut takes finishes and dyes exceptionally well, polishes to a superb luster.
