We want to cherish the trees that have grown over decades, even hundreds of years.
What I've thought after working as a carpenter for over 20 years.
Wood from demolished old houses and scraps from construction sites are disposed of as industrial waste.
We wanted to reduce, even just a little, the amount of trees that have grown over many years being thrown away, and to preserve them in a different way.
It was at this time that I came across marquetry.
At Shirotani Kobo, we do not select materials.
The knots, insect holes, and parts that have decayed over time are all features created by nature.
I incorporate this into my work.
Shiratani is a small village in the Chugoku Mountains, in Nichinan Town, Tottori Prefecture.
We are producing in a disused nursery school there.
