Glass studio Hoki started in 2017 in Kanazawa, Ishikawa. With its history as a city of craftsmanship, Kanazawa is also known for its new and modern crafts applying traditional techniques such as Kaga Zogan inlay, Kaga Yuzen dyeing and Kutani ware. Glass studio Hoki brings the expertise of traditional crafts cultivated at the Kanazawa Utatsuyama Kogei Kobo to bear in the creation of works using the special material of glass. What has always fascinated the artist in particular is the glazing and painting techniques used in ceramics, notably Kutani ware. Using ceramic glazes on sheet glass and layering them to create a single piece, Glass studio Hoki successfully creates its own unique artworks.
At Glass studio Hoki, each piece of glass and vessel is formed by hand, using a technique called Chubuki, or hand-blowing. The reason why I commit to hand-forming instead of using molds is because I want to pursue a richer and more beautiful expression of glass itself. Each piece of glass is hand-painted, and no two pieces are exactly the same. When you look at wood materials, regardless of the type of wood, you will find that they have different grains and colors, each with its own living beauty. In the same way, in my pursuit of the material of glass and the techniques of traditional craftsmanship, I strive to capture the living beauty of glass and the techniques in each of my works.
