[Hui Hui x Hong Kong Small Shop: Hop Fat Cafe] Owner: Mr. Ko Hang Yung District: Yau Tsim Mong Address: G/F, 981 Canton Road, Mong Kok Opened in 1958, Hop Fat Cafe still retains its original stainless steel counter and mosaic tile floor from that era. In 2006, the Ko couple (my parents) took over the cafe, becoming its fourth owners. Painting this piece was no small feat, as they would observe my progress every evening after closing shop. I also visited Hop Fat to capture them at work for reference; they were surprisingly excited by my request. My father would laugh as he tossed woks, while my mother juggled more cups and saucers, like a circus performer. I'm grateful to my sister for her valuable suggestions throughout the painting process. *** I'm drawn to Hong Kong's small shops because the owners remember their customers' preferences, there's space for casual chats, and their personalities shine through so easily. Most of these works were painted on-site at the small shops, allowing me to witness the subtle interactions between owners and customers as I painted.
