The Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD) is well known In ancient Chinese history for its delicacy of life.
There are 4 popular entertainments (四閒事) at that time: incense, tea, calligraphy/painting and flower.
Here is the first piece I created under this project that combined carving skills I learnt from Switzerland and Chinese traditional culture – ”雲岫” (mountains with clouds). This name is from the work of my favorite Chinese Poet, Tao Yuanming (陶淵明). He expressed his passion of the natural world and life in his famous “resignation letter”, Return to the field (《歸去來辭 》), which also represents my thoughts when I decided not to continue my job as a school teacher and begin my life as a full-time soapstone crafter.
It is a sculpture of Chinese landscape painting when it is not in used.
”Clouds” will only appear when tea ceremony is performed. With the steam from boiling water and my work is truly completed every time when it is used.
Every piece could be taken out and used in tea ceremonies, which is beautiful and functional.
Ancient Chinese philosophy emphasize on “integration of nature and human”.
Our mind travels to the mountains when we symbolize them on our desk and our soul is freed.
