Founded in the 24th year of the Meiji era (1891), Unsodo began as a publisher of art books utilizing woodblock printing techniques. The company's name was inspired by a calligraphy gifted by the literati painter Tessai Tomioka, which read "Gei, a fragrant herb." "Gei" (芸) refers to the perennial herbaceous plant of the Rutaceae family, known in Chinese as "Yun Xiang" (芸香). It is a homophone for the simplified character of "art" (藝). In the 7th year of the Taisho era (1918), the Tokyo branch was established, focusing on publishing pattern reference books and photo collections for kimono accessories and crafts, as well as producing woodblock prints for appreciation. Today, only a handful of woodblock printing publishers remain in Kyoto and Tokyo. Among them, Unsodo is the sole Japanese publisher of hand-pulled woodblock print *watoji* (traditional Japanese bookbinding), and continues to create reproductions of numerous classic works.
