【About Echizen Lacquerware】
The origin of Echizen lacquerware is said to date back approximately 1,500 years. The 6th century AD, the end of the Tumulus Period. When the 26th Emperor Keitai was still a prince, a lacquer artist from Katayama Village (now Katayama Town, Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture) was ordered to repair the damaged crown.
The lacquer artist repaired the crown with lacquer and presented him with a black lacquer bowl. The prince was deeply moved by his exquisite craftsmanship and encouraged him to start making lacquerware in Katayama Village. It is said that this was the beginning of today's Echizen lacquerware.
In addition, there have been many collectors of lacquerware in Echizen since ancient times. Lacquer planers are craftsmen who collect lacquer liquid by scratching lacquer trees. It is said that they accounted for half of Japan's lacquer planers at its peak. When building Nikko Toshogu Shrine, the Tokugawa shogunate ordered Echizen to collect large quantities of lacquer. This shows how highly rated Echizen lacquerware is. The existence of these lacquer planers also played an important role in the formation of the Echizen lacquer ware production area.
