Originally, meisen was made by densely weaving with thick silk threads drawn from waste cocoons or tama cocoons (cocoons made from two or more silkworms) for the weft, which were not suitable for fine silk fabrics, and was durable and inexpensive. Meisen silk was widely produced in the sericultural and silk weaving areas of the Kanto region (see below), where the increased production of raw silk for export after the end of the Edo period resulted in a large amount of out-of-spec silk cocoons. Starting with Isesaki and Chichibu, and including Ashikaga, Hachioji, and Kiryu, the five major production centers are considered to be the five major production centers. Patterns were not limited to the traditional Japanese style, but many were influenced by Western art such as Art Deco and Cubism. Although the production and distribution of meisen have declined due to the shift to Western-style clothing, the cultural and artistic value of the designs is highly valued, and exhibitions have been held at the Ashikaga Municipal Museum of Art and in Rome, the capital of Italy.
