We are often asked, "How is 《freehand embroidery》 different from regular machine embroidery?" Standard machine embroidery reads an embroidery design and the machine stitches it automatically, resulting in uniform and identical embroidery every time. On the other hand, 《freehand embroidery》 is a craftsman's skill where the artisan moves the fabric while stitching the design. Because it is made by hand, each piece has a unique expression. No two embroideries are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that resembles hand-embroidery. It's an incredible craft that involves transferring a sketch to the fabric and stitching while referring to the original design, coordinating the up-and-down movement of the sewing machine needle. Currently, there are only about 400 people in Vietnam who can perform freehand embroidery. Among them, only about 50 work professionally. Furthermore, only 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of embroidery certification. Of these, only 10 can perform the intricate embroidery required by Pangandaran. However, being skilled alone is not enough; embroidery requires a sense of style. A subtle nuance can significantly alter the overall impression.
