These music pieces are often very short, thus the title of this project – “music miniatures”. Hong Kong Music Miniatures is a compilation of music pieces composed for Chinese opera, first released online in 2021. All pieces have been dedicated to the public domain so that they can be used freely in actual performances, just as the existing traditional repertoire. This printed version includes 147 pieces, where set rhythms are notated in traditional mnemonic notation with a romanised version based on Cantonese pronunciation provided, and melodic works are notated in both staff notation and gongche notation. With newly added introductions to the musical features of Chinese opera as well as the traditional mnemonic notation and gongche notation, we hope that this printed version will be more user-friendly and interesting to those who are new to the music of Chinese opera.
