They are coated with acrylic resin to give them a glossy finish and durability while retaining the feel of the paper. They won't fall apart even with long-term use, and are so hard you might mistake them for ceramic, but they are very light, so they don't feel like a burden when worn. In addition, each "shizu" bead's hole is reinforced with a metal eyelet or fitting, making them very sturdy and safe for long-term use.
