【The Children Holding Flowers】
.
A child holds a flower taller than themselves, their face serene. They stand quietly, gazing intently at the bloom in their hands, determined to protect it with their small body.
Recently, I read Liu Weicheng's essay "The Children Holding Flowers." The author mentioned a puppet a friend once gifted him, encouraging him to "guard your ideals like a child guarding a flower." Initially, the author found the puppet peculiar because the flower in the child's hand was disproportionately large. However, he was later drawn to this imagery—it is precisely the child's smallness, yet their focused protection of a large flower, that highlights a pure, childlike heart.
Are we not also pursuing dreams that are larger than us and seemingly out of reach? Day after day, the weight of these dreams can leave us breathless. Yet, for the things we hold most dear, we all need the innocence and tenacity of a child, to persevere with a touch of foolish courage even when things seem impossible.
May we all become children holding flowers, and with all our might, protect our ideals, no matter how heavy they may seem.
