As it is a natural material, and the tanneries use vegetable tanning methods that minimize damage to the leather's quality, the surface inevitably bears minor "scars," "wrinkles," and "vein marks." We endeavor to avoid these during the cutting process or place them on less visible or non-stressed areas of the product. 2. Pure Hand Stitching We do not use sewing machines in the creation of our products; all items are meticulously hand-stitched. Before stitching, special pricking irons are used to create the stitch holes in the leather, which is how we achieve the beautiful, wave-like stitch pattern, a key distinction from machine stitching. While this significantly increases production time, it is a crucial step where the leather artisan imbues the piece with soul and a warm, tactile feel. 3. Hand-Burnished Edges Before the final product is complete, the last step is to burnish and seal the leather edges. This is done to ensure the edges appear smooth, rounded, and natural. "Qie Xian Pai" has its own unique edge-finishing method. First, sandpaper is used to repeatedly smooth the sharp edges of the leather. Then, an edge sealant is applied to make the edges appear flat; this process is repeated 2-3 times. Subsequently, a layer of edge wax is applied, followed by final burnishing with a polishing tool until the edges achieve a smooth finish. 4. Hand-Dyed Leather For its hand-dyed products, "Qie Xian Pai" currently uses imported Fiebing's leather alcohol dyes from the United States. To achieve even and natural coloration, we begin by dampening the leather surface with water. Then, using a sponge, we apply the dye layer by layer, from light to dark, until the desired color is achieved. After drying, a color-fixative is applied to enhance colorfastness. Finally, we apply clean water to the leather surface to remove any surface dust and further even out the color. As the dyeing is entirely done by hand, there are subtle variations in color between each bag, making every piece unique.
