Magung
For those who dwell by the sea, Mazu, the sea goddess, is undoubtedly a significant spiritual anchor. The Mazu Temple in Penghu is the oldest Mazu temple in Taiwan, designated as a "National Historic Site." In earlier times, fishermen from the Fujian coast would enshrine Mazu on their ships for blessings of safety during their voyages. Later, after settling in Penghu, they moved the worship ashore, building temples. Time has passed, and for over 400 years, Mazu has protected the people of Penghu. It was known by various names such as "Niang Gong," "Niang Niang Gong," "Niang Ma Gong," "Ma Niang Gong," and "Ma Zu Gong." Even the ferry landing was called "Ma Zu Gong," later shortened to "Magung." Since "Magung" sounds similar to "Makung" in Japanese, and "Makung" has fewer strokes and is easier to distinguish, the Japanese marked it as Makung on military maps before occupying Taiwan and Penghu. After the Japanese occupation, they established the Makung Important Port Office in Penghu in 1901, but the administrative area retained the Qing Dynasty name "Magung Ao." It was only in 1920 that "Magung Ao" was changed to "Makung Street," officially becoming the origin of the place name Makung.
The Mazu Temple in Penghu is Taiwan's first Mazu temple, and the former name of Makung City was "Magung." In early Taiwan, before the advent of paint and cement, walls were often finished with lime plaster. Penghu had the finest, whitest coral fragments, which, when mixed with coal and fired, could produce lime. The Mazu Temple's construction at that time utilized this lime-based technique. The temple was bestowed the title "Tian Hou" (Empress Dowager) and a "Golden Face" by Emperor Kangxi, distinguishing it from the predominantly black-faced Mazu deities in Taiwan. Considered a treasure trove of art, the temple's architecture features gold leaf painting, stone carvings, wood carvings, intricate engravings, and colorful paintings, all created by renowned Taiwanese artisans, fully showcasing Taiwan's artistic achievements.
When formulating this ink, we drew inspiration from this, embodying the grandeur of the Mazu Temple with its stone grey hue.
